Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota will attend a high level ministerial debate at the United Nations Security Council on the admission of South Sudan to the UN, on July 13, 2011, in New York. The meeting will be chaired by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Guido Westerwelle.
The Security Council will evaluate a resolution draft recommending the admission of South Sudan to the UN to the General Assembly, in a vote that will be held on 14 July. The admission of a new member state to the United Nations must be approved by a two-thirds majority of its members, or 128 votes. In case of a favorable voting, South Sudan will become the 193rd member of the United Nations.
