On May 19, the Mercosur Education Fund entered into force in Brazil.
One of the main goals to be achieved by the Fund is the support of mobility programs for students and teachers within Mercosur countries, by offering exchange scholarships. The Fund will thus play an important role in fostering academic integration among the partners in the bloc.
In addition to Mercosur Member States (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay), FEM is open to participation by Associate States (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela). Initial contributions to the Fund are expected to reach US$ 1 million, to which other grants from Associate States, third countries, international organizations and private sector may be added.
FEM is the first social fund within Mercosur to enter operational stage. Other areas to be covered are family agriculture, culture and tourism promotion.
