The Brazilian Government is concerned about the escalation of violence in Syria, which has left, in the past days, a large number of people dead, particularly in Deraa, Homs and on the outskirts of Damascus.  The Brazilian Government denounces the use of force against unarmed demonstrators and expects the crisis to be solved through dialogue.

The Brazilian Government notes that the legitimate desires of the peoples of the Arab world must be met with inclusive political processes and not with military force.

The Brazilian Government reaffirms that the responsibility of dealing with the impact of the crisis in the Arab world on international peace and security falls to the United Nations Security Council and highlights the importance of the role played by regional organizations – particularly the League of Arab States and the African Union – in the diplomatic mediation efforts.
