Republic of Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands is a sovereign State of Oceania. The Marshall Islands became independent in 1986, under a Compact of Free Association with the United States of America. The compact holds the Government of the Marshall Islands responsible for domestic issues and foreign policy, except for the domains under the United States responsibility. The country is a constitutional republic, with a mixed regime. Health and climate change are sensitive themes to the country.

Brazil and the Marshall Islands establish diplomatic relations through a Joint Communiqué signed on July 27, 2010, in New York, by the respective Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. Between July 18 and 23 of 2012, President Christopher Loeak was the first Head of Government from the Marshall Islands to visit Brazil, on the occasion of Rio+20. There are topics of common interest in the international agenda, such as environment and climate change, and the possibility of cooperation in areas such as tourism and social programs.
