The Dominican Republic is one of the biggest economies in the Caribbean, the index of average growth has been 6.5% during the past years. The country is member of the Association of Caribbean States and of the Central American Integration System.
Some relevant aspects of the bilateral relationship are the Technical Cooperation Programme, in areas such as environment, heath, security and capacity training, and the Brazil-Dominican Republic Cultural Centre, which graduated more than 600 students in Portuguese language courses.
During the working visit of the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mauro Viera, to Santo Domingo, in 2015, projects in areas of agricultural development, human rights, education, planning, social security and health were draft. In 2018, Chancellor Miguel Vargas had a working visit to Brazil and participated in the Dominican Embassy's launching ceremony of its foundation stone. During the meeting issues in the field of trade, technical cooperation and the countries' articulation in the process of harmonization between MERCOSUR and SICA were brought up. Additionally, six international acts were signed in areas such as defence, tourism and business visas, political consultations, air service, diplomatic training, commerce and investment.
In 2018, the bilateral commerce totalized US$ 734.81 million. Brazilian exports to the Dominican Republic amount US$718.97 million (a growth of 22.2% if compared to 2017), and the imports amount US$ 15.84 million. The bilateral scale favours Brazil, with surplus of US$ 703.13 million.
