Brazil and Barbados established diplomatic relations in 1971, five years after the independence of the Caribbean country, on 30 November 1966. Brazil has an Embassy in the capital, Bridgetown, since 1985.

Recent years have recorded growing rapprochement between Brazil and Barbados, as evidenced by the opening of the Embassy of Barbados in Brasilia, in April 2010, and the establishment, in June of the same year, of a direct flight between São Paulo and Bridgetown, the only regular direct connection Brazil currently has with this part of the Caribbean.

In the field of economic relations, bilateral trade between Brazil and Barbados was US$ 21.7 million in 2015, with Brazilian exports of about US$ 16 million. In the educational area, between 2002 and 2013 Barbados sent to Brazil 20 undergraduate and graduate students benefited from cooperation agreements with the Brazilian Government.

Barbados is contemplated with cooperation initiatives with the group of CARICOM countries. Brazil, through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), established a program of courses in agriculture, through which were carried out coaching activities, training, diagnosis and expert advice, open to all member countries of the Caribbean Community.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados visited Brazil in September 2013, accompanied by business mission integrated by representatives of companies in the solar energy, food processing, pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors.

2005 – Lectureship creation for teaching the Brazilian language and culture at the University of the West Indies, campus in Barbados

2008 – The Prime Minister of Barbados represents his country at the Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean on Integration and Development (CALC I), in Costa do Sauipe – BA

2010 – Opening of the Embassy of Barbados in Brasilia

2010 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados participates in the First Brazil–Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Summit,  in Brasilia

2012 – The Prime Minister of Barbados heads the Barbadian delegation to Rio+20

2012 – Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota visit Barbados and meets with the Foreign Minister of Barbados

2012 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados participates in the meeting of the BASIC group (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) in Brasilia

2013 – The foreign ministers of Brazil and Barbados meet during the First Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), in Chile

2013 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados holds working visit to Brasilia and São Paulo, accompanied by Barbadian government officials and businessmen from her country

2013 –  The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados, Maxine McClean, visits Brazil (September 17)
