Foreign Affairs

The Embassy of Brazil in Rabat was installed in 1963. The Embassy of Morocco in Brazil was opened in 1967. Brazil has the status of privileged partner of Morocco. The two countries have, since 1999, a political consultation mechanism.

High level visits exchange has been more frequent since the 2000’s. In 2008, Foreign Minister Celso Amorim visited the country to co-host the 1^st Joint Commission Meeting). In 2011, Foreign Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota visited Rabat and, in 2013, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco, Saad Eddine El-Othmani, visited Brasília. In 2016, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira visited Rabat, when he held a meeting with Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar.

Chronology of Bilateral Relations

1906 – Establishment of diplomatic relations; the Brazilian representation to Morocco is created, cumulative with the Embassy of Brazil in Lisbon

1963 – Opening of the Embassy of Brazil in Rabat

1967 – Opening of the Embassy of Morocco in Brasília

1975 – Signature of agreement on regular air transportation between the two countries

1980 – Visit to Brazil of the Prime Minister of Morocco, Maati Bouabide

1984 – President João Figueiredo visits Morocco

1992 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Rezek, visits Morocco

1992 – Prince Sidi Mohammed visits Brazil to participate in the Rio-92 Earth Summit

1994 –­ The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celso Amorim, visits Morocco

1999 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Morocco, Abdellatif Filali visits Brazil

2004 – King Mohammed VI visits Brazil; signature of Trade Framework Agreement between MERCOSUR and Morocco

2006 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco, Mohamed Benaïssa, visits Brazil

2008 – 1^st Meeting of the Joint Committee Brazil-Morocco, in Rabat, June 24-25, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celso Amorim

2009 – Visit to Morocco of the Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), Miguel Jorge

2010 – 1^st Meeting of the Joint Committee for Trade and Investments Promotion Brazil-Morocco, in Brasília

2010 – Ministers of Industry, Trade and New Technologies; of Employment and Social Matters; of Workmanship; and of Foreign Trade of Morocco visit Brazil

2011 – Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Morocco, Youssef Amrani, visits Brazil

2011 – Former Minister of Agrarian Development, Antonio Florence, accompanied by the President of EMBRAPA and Dr. José Graziano, candidate, at the time, for the post of Director General of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) visit Morocco. Signature of Memorandum of Understanding between Brazil and Morocco on Cooperation in Family Farming and Rural Development

2011 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Patriota, visits Morocco (September 5)

2012 – The Minister of Defense, Celso Amorim, visits Morocco. Meeting with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eddine El Othmani, and with the Deputy Minister before the Prime Minister in charge of Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi

2012 – President of the Moroccan Chamber of Counselors, Mohamed Cheikh, visits Brazil. Meeting with the President of the Federal Senate, Senator José Sarney

2012 – Moroccan Delegation, headed by Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane takes part in the Rio+20 Summit. On the occasion of the conference, Benkirane met the Congresswoman Rose de Freitas (PMDB/ES). Work meeting between the Minister of Mines, Energy, Water Resources and Environment of Morocco, Fouad Douriri, and the Executive Secretary of the Minister of Mines and Energy, Márcio Zimmermann

2012 – Non-official visit of President Dilma Rousseff to Morocco

2013 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco, Mr. Saad Eddine El-Othmani, visits Brazil (September 18-19)

2013 – The Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Developmente, Industry and Foregign Trade, Ricardo Schaefer, leads Brazilian business mission to Morocco. Opening of the Business Forum Brazil-Morocco

2014 – The Chief-Minister of the Secretariat of the Human Rights of Presidency of the Republic, Ideli Salvatti, heads the Brazilian Delegation to the II World Human Rights Forum, held in Marrakech (the first event took place in Brazil, in December 2013)

2015 – Visit to Brazil of Mr. Aziz Rabbah, Minister of Equipment, Transport and Logistics

2016 – Visit of Minister Mauro Vieira to Rabat, when he holds meeting with Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, and meet with the Ministers of Equipment, Transport and Logistics, Azziz Rabbah, and of Industry, Trade, Investment and the Digital Economy of Morocco, Moulay Hafid Elalamy, with whom he will co-host the opening of the Brazil-Morocco Business Seminar. The Brazilian Foreign Minister is received by Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane (March 10)

2016 – Joint Statement adopted on the occasion of the Official Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil by invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdon of Morocco [Portuguese] (March 10)

2018 – Minister of Foreign Affairs Aloysio Nunes Ferreira visits Marrakech on the occasion of the Intergovernmental Conference to adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (Marrakech, December 10-11)
